Old Thyme-y

Some ingredients are just too hard not to pun. Pear is a great example, followed closely by thyme. So I was basically obligated to include a time/thyme pun in the title, especially for this delicious old fashioned riff. #notsorry about it though.

The drink was made to celebrate a yummy rhubarb thyme syrup kindly sent to me by @boozybotanicals. My mind didn’t go in the stirred direction first, but when a chance to visit my friend @morgan.micheletti came up (who has a literal whiskey library/chapel), it seemed like a fun opportunity. We landed on a rye heavy bourbon as the backbone, split slightly with a peated scotch. Add a bit of angostura for seasoning, and the result is a rich, almost savory-leaning old fashioned with smoke and herbs and a little fruit, matching beautifully with the spice notes of the whiskies and bitters. Perhaps the flavor combo isn’t that surprising when you consider Sfumato, a smoky rhubarb-based amaro— and I would bet you could make a pretty cool riff using the amaro here.

Recipe

  • 1.5oz rye-forward bourbon whiskey

  • 0.5oz peated scotch

  • 0.25 rhubarb thyme syrup

  • 2 dashes angostura bitters

Stir with ice l until chilled. Strain into glass over large clear ice cube. Express and include lemon peel and garnish with (lemon) thyme. Cheers!!
