Still On Vacation

Last week you saw a pre-vacation drink: something super tropical to get into the mood for the beach. This is the drink to have once you're back from vacation-- something boozy to sip while relaxing on the couch, with enough tropical-ness to keep those vacation vibes going for a *little* bit longer.

This drink was also my submission that led to my first opportunity to get behind a real bar. Thank you again to @bigicehtx for putting the competition together, @trashpandadrinkingclub for hosting, and @stillatx / @ilegalmezcal for sponsoring. It was an absolute blast. Huge props to the winners of the competition and to all you real bartenders out there.

The drink is an old fashioned riff with fresh juice. This isn't a mistake, nor is it without precedent. @punch_drink actually published an article (3/4/22) describing the phenomenon. In general, it works best when the juice is a small proportion compared to the entire drink. Here, a bit of fresh pineapple juice gives a huge burst of pineapple flavor and a bit of brightness, while still allowing the bourbon to be front and center. The touch of rum adds to the tropical flavor and helps integrate the sherry. It's a tasty one, so give it a go, especially if you've never stirred with juice!

Recipe

STIR all ingredients until chilled. Strain over large ice cube and garnish with fresh pineapple. Cheers!
