Manhattan Old Fashioned

I’m excited to share the first of a couple drinks featuring an amazing Colorado-based distillery, @lawswhiskey. I had the chance to meet some of their team recently and they kindly sent some of their amazing whiskey. There are also some cool personal ties to their story that I’ll share during my next post. To start things off, I wanted to keep it simple, but of course with a twist.

I’m not sure if anyone has come across a similar drink before, but this is a “class switch”— reimagining a classic drink in a different style. I took some sweet vermouth and reduced it slightly (200g to 120g) and added 120g turbinado sugar. I upped my nerd game and came up with these ratios to get a Brix of low 60s, close to a rich syrup. I used Carpano Antica so for other vermouths, adjust accordingly.

The drink is delicious. It reads like an Old Fashioned— boozy, whiskey-forward— but the sweet vermouth plays a bigger role than the syrup usually does in this format, definitely bringing up the flavor profile you’d expect from a Manhattan, but experienced in a totally different way. I would absolutely give this syrup a try and Laws rye is an awesome fit!

Recipe

  • 2oz Laws Rye Whiskey (gifted)

  • 2 tsp rich sweet vermouth syrup

  • 2 dashes angostura bitters

Combine ingredients and add large ice, stir to chill/dilute, garnish with orange twist and optional cherry (not shown here). Cheers!!
